C.L.A.S.S. Smart Interview 01/2024 Isabella Goldmann

C.L.A.S.S. comes back with its Smart Interview series with a very special one during Milan Design Week! C.L.A.S.S. Ceo Giusy Bettoni interviews Isabella Goldmann, Founder and Managing Partner of Goldmann & Partners srl SB, one of the most renowned design and research companies in Italy dedicated to Sustainable Bioclimatic Architecture. Isabella has always loved the idea of design and beauty combined with science. The sustainable scientific innovation conceived to support the improvement of our society, a healthy architecture and the environment protection, pushed Isabella to specialize in Bio Architecture, a discipline based on the balance between human beings, homes and the environment. Considering also Milan Design Week 2024’s theme, Materia Natura, that emphasizes sustainability as a guiding principle and fundamental value in creative and design process, the key-players of design have activated our interest as responsible innovation in fashion and design are nowadays more closely connected than ever. We’ve asked an ambassador and expert like Isabella Goldmann to tell us her experience.

Announcing C.L.A.S.S. Ambassador: PATRIZIA MAGGIA

C.L.A.S.S. is very proud to announce a special Ambassador in 2024: Patrizia Maggia - Director of Fatti ad Arte and President in Agenzia Lane d’Italia.

1. The key password talking to Patrizia is “craftmanship”. What does it mean for you and which is the relationship with responsible innovation?

Craftsmanship today is one of the few social and economic sectors fully in line with balanced and sustainable development. "Maestri Artigiani" are guardians of knowledge and culture; their artifacts represent the core of our finest Made in Italy, admired and recognized globally. Our craftsmanship involves remarkable people who make a product unique. In fashion, behind the glamour, there are pattern makers, tailors, embroiderers, pleaters – skilled hands that create works of art, essential creators of beauty.

2. Can you take us through your world?

I believe in an intimate balance in nature that generates beauty, something perhaps unreachable for humans, but inspiring. I've always emphasized communicating and conveying beauty as a growth tool, questioning why we consume resources and energy to produce a multitude of insignificant, often ugly items designed to be ephemeral and clutter our homes.

My sensitivity has driven me to seek the most authentic expressions of making, fascinated by what can be generated from the knowledge of hands. This has sparked a desire to narrate the beauty and wonder wherever it exists.

As the Director of Fatti ad Arte, promoting and valuing high craftsmanship, I manage the curation of exhibitions, exhibit and teaching activities, and the promotion of craftsmanship as a tool for social recovery. I link artisanal expressions between Biella, a UNESCO Creative City for Crafts & Folk Art, and similar entities within the UNESCO network. In 2022, the Cologni Foundation for the Crafts awarded me the MAM Prize as a supporter of the Crafts.

I am committed to the valorization of native wools, serving as the President of the Lane d'Italia Agency since 2005. Unfortunately, the value of this precious fiber has been completely lost in recent years, not just economically but also socially and culturally, turning what was once a valuable resource into "special waste."

3. Why Patrizia Maggia and CLASS?

The collaboration with CLASS and Giusy Bettoni was inevitable. The Lane d'Italia Agency's journey in utilizing native wools, seeking a sustainable and ethically correct wool processing chain, and ensuring total traceability of products led us to parallel paths, eventually collaborating on projects in Bolivia and Peru with the NGO Progettomondo to enhance Andean fibers and weaving.

As an international textile consultant, I've had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with great "Maestri Artigiani," guardians of ancestral traditions and knowledge so authentic they are expressions of rare beauty. This tradition centers on the relationship with nature and time, especially profound at an altitude of 4,500 meters, where the air is so thin it seems to purify the mind, leaving no room for the superfluous, showing how these populations have transformed the essential into art.

This expresses a new concept of luxury, not quantifiable in economic terms but rich in values, an important source to draw from, not just to take as we always have but to relearn what we have lost, which is the right attitude towards nature and our surrounding environment.

4. What’s next in your journey?

In recent years, the network of collaborations of the Lane d'Italia Agency has significantly expanded, both nationally and internationally, like the recent experience in Morocco with Berber weavers. It was a pleasure to work with them, to enter and understand their way of being on this earth and how vital it is today to preserve it.

To achieve this, it's crucial to provide them with awareness of the value of their craftsmanship and the conditions that allow them to spread it, so we might benefit from artifacts with rich cultural, social, and ethical values that we can and must champion.

This is what I intend to do, with our "Maestri Artigiani," those whom Japan calls living treasures, and with the Masters of the territories and places where I am called to work. In 2023, Slow Food honored me by nominating me for the "Women Saving the Earth" Award.

This is also the task of fashion today, which can use its power to transmit a new operational responsibility and must question the cost, in terms of environmental impact and correct work ethics, of what it produces. In short, we need to broaden our vision beyond the immediate, as some past populations had a planning horizon of seven generations within which to foresee the effects of their choices.

C.L.A.S.S. Smart Voice 2/2023: Circularity as a state of mind

Circular Economy has become a “hot” word in everyday conversation, but we know it is something representing a big, complex , challenging - but fundamental value if we want to talk about a new generation of textile system. This means reducing waste to a minimum and It involves new business models such as sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible.
